Innovative floating solar project in Uganda - 8.2 REEH starts second stage

8.2 Renewable Energy Experts Hamburg GmbH (8.2 REEH) recently completed the second project stage of support for an innovative floating solar project (“floating PV”) in Uganda. Based on the results of the site surveys, the feasibility of possible floating PV systems has now been assessed.

The interdisciplinary consulting mandate (“Consultancy Services for Analytical Studies related to Prospects for Floating Solar Power Generation”) is carried out as part of a consortium led by Sweco International AB, represented by Sakeb Hussein. This project, financed by Swedfund, aims to promote the use of solar energy in the country while meeting the needs of the local population, environment and economy.

Floating solar on reservoirs along the Nile

The feasibility of possible floating PV systems is being tested on four reservoirs of various hydropower plants along the Nile between Jinja and Karuma. The suitability of the various locations is assessed on the basis of holistic criteria and compared with each other. The goal is to determine an optimal location for the subsequent implementation of the first floating solar pilot project in Uganda. “We are proud to contribute to promoting renewable energy in Uganda and look forward to accompanying this pilot project,” explains Ralf Reek, managing director of 8.2 Renewable Energy Experts Hamburg. It is expected that the project will not only improve the supply of CO2-neutral, renewable electricity in the region, but also contribute to creating jobs and promoting economic development.

8.2 Renewable Energy Experts Hamburg GmbH will support the project from planning to awarding as part of the team of experts.
